Our office combines local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation to provide a comfortable experience for your child during their dental procedure. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a safe and effective sedative agent mixed with oxygen that’s inhaled through a small mask.
When inhaled, nitrous oxide enters the bloodstream through the lungs and quickly reaches the brain. There, it acts on the limbic system, which controls emotions. This results in a feeling of relaxation and can even produce some mild anesthesia.
The effects of nitrous oxide are mild, and you can typically observe your child feeling calmer and more relaxed. These effects are quickly reversible, and your child can resume regular activity shortly after.
Nitrous oxide can be used for various procedures, including:
Nitrous oxide is one of the safest sedatives available, making it the perfect choice for children. It has very few side effects and is mild enough that your little one can go back to their normal routine shortly after their procedure is complete.
Another benefit of nitrous oxide is that it doesn’t require an IV, which we know can be scary for children. Instead, they simply breathe in the sedative through a small mask.
At Premier Pediatric Dentistry, we’re committed to providing a comforting environment for all kids. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective way to help your child feel more relaxed during their dental procedure. Contact our team today if you have any other questions!
