How to Help Your Child Stop Thumb Sucking

October 3, 2022

Most infants and younger children suck their thumbs to soothe themselves. While this natural reflex offers a sense of security during difficult periods, it can lead to oral health issues if the habit continues until the child is older. A pediatric dentist in Miami confirms that older children who still suck their thumbs are likely to experience teeth misalignment and speech impediments. This habit may also cause the child’s mouth to change shape.

Thumb Sucking: How to Help Your Child Kick the Habit

Open Up a Dialogue

Some children fail to realize that they should outgrow their thumb sucking habit. For this reason, you might want to try asking your child why they suck their thumb. However, it’s best to do so in a curious rather than condemning way.

Ask them how the habit makes them feel or if they know they’re doing it. If your child says that thumb sucking makes them feel good, try asking if there’s something else they can do to make them feel just as good, like counting slowly or hugging their favorite stuffed animal.

Offer Reassurance

You’ll want to talk to your child about their thumb sucking habit without turning it into a confrontation. It’s best to reassure them that you’ll be there to help instead of telling them to stop. When your child understands that you’re there for them, they’ll feel more empowered to come to you when they’re ready to stop.

Provide Distraction

Although keeping a child distracted 100% of the time is impossible, distraction may be effective in conjunction with other methods. Allowing them to try arts and crafts, writing, dancing, baking, jewelry making, biking, and sports can provide distraction because these activities can help keep your child’s hands busy.

Use Thumb Guards

Try looking for bendable thumb guards to help your child lose interest in thumb sucking. These bendable items have air holes on their sides that prevent your child from creating suction when trying to suck on their thumb. It’s also best to ask a trusted pediatric dentist about thumb guards and other devices that go in the mouth.
