Our most common material for cavity treatment is known as a white filling. This treatment, known as composite resin restoration, is recommended when a child has decay that extends into the inner portion of the tooth.
Once a cavity reaches the tooth’s inner layer, some form of surgical treatment is required to remove it. During this composite resin restoration, we will partially or fully remove the cavitated portion of the tooth and replace it with a white filling. This restores the tooth’s natural shape and form.
Composite resin fillings can last for 5 to 12 years. Many factors can also contribute to how long these dental restorations can last, primarily their location and size. Larger fillings and those placed in the back of the mouth tend to have a shorter lifespan.
Your child’s habits can also impact how long their composite fillings last. Limiting sugar and maintaining proper oral hygiene can help their restoration last for many years.
